Y’all know that Miami weather is all heat, all the time.
While the winter months tend to be slightly more mild, 90 degree weather is pretty common throughout the fall months. As someone who just lives for sweater weather, this presents quite the challenge. How do I wear my favorite fall trends while staying cool and comfortable in the hot weather?
I posed this question to fellow blogger and former Tampa girl, Carly, who blogs over on The College Prepster. Her response: you just can’t. The layering and heavier fabrics just don’t mix with the heat and humidity of Florida weather. Carly’s recommendation is to take fall patterns and colors and infuse them into my outfits comprised of lighter fabrics.
Armed with Carly’s advice and some oxblood-colored accessories, I embarked on putting together my fall wardrobe. One of the hacks I discovered along the way was already sitting in my closet: skirts.
I always had a few stretchy pencil skirts on hand, but never considered them as a wardrobe staple by any means. However recently, skirts have become an almost daily outfit choice for me. I can get them in a variety of colors (including my favorite fall colors and patterns) and they really do leave me feeling a lot less…overheated…than trying to wear pants or trousers in 90 degree weather.
Here are a few of my favorite fall skirt combinations:
A breezy striped cotton dress (similar found at Old Navy) is super comfy and can be dressed down with sandals or dressed up, as above, for work or a happy hour. I always carry a cardigan or jacket with me, as AC tends to be blasted on high indoors. While it often rains in Miami, necessitating boots, I find that booties are a lot more weather-friendly than the knee-high variety (whether in leather or classic rain boot material, like these gorgeous ones by Kate Spade).
Skirts always seem to be able to dress up an outfit, which is why I love them for meetings. As always, accessories are key. For me, an essential is this reversible tote from Just Fab, which is so versatile. I also love shooties–they are a great way to be fashion forward, yet stay comfortable. And, they give me the feeling of wearing a boot (a favorite fall staple) but give my feet a little more breathing room. These shooties from Nine West are to-die for!
